The Maracay Opera House (Teatro de la Ópera de Maracay or TOM) in Venezuela recently updated its facilities with a series of DAS Audio professional sound systems. This magnificent performance theater was constructed in the 1900s and can seat over 850 spectators in its ornate main hall, which was recently reopened after undergoing a complete renovation to restore its former twentieth-century splendor, at its height during the 70s and 80s.

The renovation also included a new end-to-end audio update for the venue’s main hall, which stages a variety of visiting productions, from plays to musical performances, as well as an extensive program of both national and international social, cultural and political events. The Opera House management team, wanting to outfit the main hall with a top-of-the-line sound system, called in local company Illardo Audio to handle the Maracay Opera House’s new sound install.

With Raúl Ilardo at the helm, the sound crew opted to install 18 powered DAS Aero-20A systems as the house mains. These high-performance line arrays were paired with six powered DAS LX-118A subwoofers and flown in a left – right configuration on either side of the stage. Each loudspeaker cluster employs a combination of three LX-118A subwoofers along with nine Aero 20A line array systems which were suspended beneath the subwoofers and angled to provide enhanced and more uniform coverage for the entire semicircular seating area.

Two additional Aero-20A were brought in as frontfill for the theater’s down-in-front seats, while powered DAS Road-12A perform stage monitoring duties. The system was rounded out with SX-218A subwoofers and multifunctional Convert-12A systems paired with Action-18A subwoofers to take care of sidefill and drumfill.

As one of the city’s main cultural hubs, the multidisciplinary Maracay Opera House offers various venues and facilities for celebrating a full range of cultural activities. Photography, painting and sculpture exhibitions are often showcased in the Foyer, which also hosts literary presentations, chamber concerts and film festivals. Given the versatile needs of this space, the sound technicians decided to install an easily transportable mobile set of multifunction DAS Convert -12A systems.

The complete DAS professional sound system installed at the Maracay Opera House can be monitored and controlled remotely with DASnet™, the audio management system for DAS powered cabinets and processors, while DAS DSP-4080 and DSP-2060A systems distributed throughout the venue handle digital signal processing for the entire setup.
