Built in the late 1980s, the Stade Ernest-Wallon in Toulouse (France) has recently undergone a head-to-toe makeover that included the installation of a new state-of-the-art DAS professional sound reinforcement system. With seating for over 19,000 spectators, the stadium is currently the home of the Stade Toulousain rugby union club, hailed as one of the finest rugby clubs in Europe after racking up a record 19 French Championship titles and four European Championships.
Audiovisual engineering expert Triaxe was called in to handle the design and installation of the stadium’s new sound reinforcement system. Faced with the challenge of designing a system both flexible enough to meet the stadium’s range of needs and robust enough to withstand exposure to the elements, Triaxe joined forces with Axente, exclusive distributor of DAS products in France, who recommended DAS Audio’s high-performance WR systems, which are designed specifically for outdoor installations.
After analyzing the stadium’s four covered stands, the sound team deployed a total of 76 DAS WR-8826CX systems for this large-scale remodel. These weather-resistant systems were angled to provide superb sound throughout the stadium, some hung directly from the covered roof to face the stands and others angled towards the first few rows for uniform sound coverage.
A DAS WR-6415CX system was also installed in the tunnel to ensure perfect sound for the players as they take the field. The stadium’s audio overhaul also included DAS DSP-2060A digital signal processors, which control and manage the signal –sent by powerful Powersoft Ottocanali 8K4 amps– for the stadium’s army of WR systems.
DAS Audio’s WR system meet the demanding standards of IP-54 normative, ensuring their resistance to both dust and moisture and making them the perfect choice for outdoor installations.
These systems offer two exposure ratings: CX (covered exposure) for applications where cabinets are covered or protected, and DX (direct exposure) where cabinets are unprotected and directly exposed to the environment. These systems also meets the demanding standards of EN54-24 certification for voice alarm systems.
Part of the Sept Deniers sports complex (complete with three adjoining fields and a complex designed to house Stade Toulousain’s successful rugby school), the recently renovated Stade Ernest-Wallon ranks as one of Europe’s best rugby stadiums and now boasts a professional sound system to match.
